4 Tips To Keep Your Pet From Destroying Your Yard

If you are a pet owner, and more specifically have dogs, then you are probably quite familiar with the damage your lawn may see as a result of them. Although our beloved pets do not mean to cause damage to grass and landscapes, over time the constant digging, urination, and droppings are going to take their toll on your green grass. To keep your property looking beautiful and your pets happy, there are some things you can do to prevent the wear and tear of pets on your lawn.

Tip #1: Designate a specific area on your lawn for your pets to go to the bathroom

If nothing else, try to train your pet to use a specific spot on the lawn as a bathroom, preferably off to the side or an edge of your property. Even if your pet has been free to roam for a while, it should only take a few weeks to train your pet to use a specific spot. This way you can better care for the area by diluting the urine with a hose and picking up the droppings.

Tip #2: Take more walks away from your property

By taking your pet for more walks on trails or in a dog park, you will be eliminating some of the damage to your own property. Places such as dog parks are designed for dogs to play around so as long as you bring your doggie bags to clean up after your pet, getting away from your own property is a good idea to encourage play time elsewhere. Often times, dogs just need a good run around and then they will not take that energy out via digging holes in your grass. So a walk in the park may be just the thing to stop the digging at home.

Tip #3: Create a designated pet area with gravel

If a dog park or walking trail is not nearby, you could create a designated pet area on your property. Instead of worrying about the grass or plants, spread gravel or crushed stone around an area that can be just for your pet. This way you don’t have worry about the urine and digging although you may still want to pick up the droppings to keep it clean. You can incorporate this area into your landscaping so that it looks more natural and less like a pet bathroom.

Tip #4: Build a fence to help keep your pet from damaging the landscaping

Building a fence is another good way to keep your pet from running around your lawn. At least a fence around more precious areas like gardens and plants that you do not want to risk losing to any digging habits. The fence should be coordinated to blend in with your current landscaping so it does not appear to be an uninviting or chaotic looking lawn.

Hopefully these tips will keep your lawn from taking the brunt of pet damages. Your pets will soon discover that the green grass and plants are off limits to digging and using as a bathroom. Not only will you have greener grass, but you will also have better trained pet in the end!
