• ‘Digital’ has been replacing older ‘analogue’ technologies across a range of electrical and electronic products, including telephones, while modern computers and mobile phones are entirely based on digital technology.  The ‘analogue switch-off’ in television has done much to make the public aware of the ‘digitisation’ process.

• Digital communications are divided between ‘voice’ and ‘data’ transmissions. ‘Calls’ or ‘calling’ refers to speaking (or voice communication) on a telephone, mobile phone, etc. Digital telephone lines carry the transmission of voice and data signals separately. ‘Broadband’ refers to modern digital lines that are broad enough in bandwidth to transmit large amounts of data simultaneously (including voice, text, images and video, abbreviated commercially to video on demand — VOD).

• Non-voice transmission of data includes: ‘texting’, using the short message service (SMS) offered by mobile network operators; ‘fax’ (facsimile), a technology that has largely been made redundant by e-mail; and ‘messaging’ using Internet websites (e.g. Microsoft’s Windows Messenger).  Although messaging has some more specific usages, Key Note is using it to refer generally to any non-e-mail use of the Internet to send text messages (e.g. the consumer research conducted for this Market Report refers to ‘communicating with other people through a website or Internet chatroom’).

• ‘Mobile phone’ refers to a wireless telephone that uses radio waves, rather than land lines, to communicate on an authorised network.   ‘Mobile phone’ is a British English usage; in the US and other countries, the term ‘cell phone’ is used, taken from the cellular transmission technology used. Other mobile devices for communicating include wireless handheld products, such as the BlackBerry series, which incorporate personal digital assistant (PDA) functions (i.e. a range of computer software).

• Mobile phones are now in their third generation (3G) of development. They include wireless application protocol (WAP), a standard for providing mobile data services on hand-held devices. High-speed data packet application (HSDPA) is a technology that lets content be downloaded three times faster than the original 3G standard, while inter-system call handover (ISHO) lets calls cross seamlessly between 3G and second-generation (2G) networks.

A mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) is a company that buys wholesale minutes from a network operator to sell on to customers using its own brand (e.g. Tesco Mobile is an MVNO using the T-Mobile network).Digital Communications can be an interesting Marketing Project Report to work on.

• Internet terms used include ‘Web’, short for World Wide Web (consisting of websites); Web 2.0 (‘web two oh’), a vague term that simply refers to the latest generation of online use (including use of the Internet as a two-way medium through ‘user-generated content’ and ‘social networking’ online. Internet service providers (ISPs) are companies that provide the means (hardware, software and telephone lines) to connect to the Internet. VOIP is technology that allows the use of a broadband Internet connection to make ‘phone calls’, including video phone calls. ‘Wi-fi’ is the ability to connect to the Internet wirelessly. Internet ‘hotspots’ in coffee shops, airports, etc. use this technology.Project Report on Marketing on Digital Communication makes an interesting Marketing Dissertation Topic.
