Treating Addictions and Disorders Simultaneously

Addictions and disorders of the mind have long been associated with each other. Sometimes it’s the drug abuse that causes the disorders, sometimes it’s the reverse. In most cases of people seeking treatment for a substance dependency and mental condition (a condition called dual diagnosis), their problems are so intertwined that it’s very difficult to know where to start treatment as the root cause of both problems have been blurred. This is alarmingly becoming more common as drugs are often the first recommended treatment to any disorders. And though the benefits of drugs can’t be denied, its continued use risks developing addiction.
Take, for example, people suffering from an eating disorder – now a common condition among young individuals – who had gone on to develop a dependency on drugs. Many teens want to be extremely thin, perceiving that a skeletal-like body is somehow desirable, and they go through great measures just to get their ideal image. To reach their goals, they will avoid food, make themselves sick, and even take drugs. The result is a combination of addictions and disorders, which can be very dangerous and, in extreme cases, even fatal. What complicates this matter is that those suffering from a psychological disorder are more prone to develop more disorders, and those abusing one type of drug will likely use other types of drugs. Unless helped, those suffering from this condition may be consumed by their problems.
People suffering from anxiety and depression may even be in more danger. Most drugs, and practically all prescription drugs, have a calming effect on the brain. For a person whose brains are overworked or stressed, this can be a very good feeling. They may then begin to abuse using the drugs, eventually making it their sole means to feel good. This starts the downward spiral of addictions and disorders. They will require more drugs to feel the same level of comfort, while not exactly curing the disorder. It's unfortunate, but there really are people whose genes and history make it difficult for them to function normally. Yes, drugs can help them cope with their situation, and in many cases can get them through rough patches in their life. But they shouldn’t be using drugs alone, they need to have a whole treatment program.
Another mental condition that makes people prone to drug addiction is bipolar disorder, a condition characterized by strong and constant changes in emotional state. Bipolar people experience sudden mood shifts. Bipolar individuals are at risk of developing different
addictions and disorders, which nearly always in devastating results. According to Internet Medical Health, a group dedicated to providing health related information to the public, the firs type of bipolar disorder has a high rate of recurrence and, if left untreated, has 15% risk of leading the sufferer to commit suicide. This is some of the reasons why individuals who suffer from addictions and disorders have to find and admit themselves to a treatment center facility and ensure that their problems are properly addressed.
