The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) stated that a 2011 research says Bisphosphonate drugs is more effective to patients whose vitamin D levels are increased. Research shows that the body's reaction to biphosphonates corresponds with its Vitamin D level.

Drugs that treats osteoporosis and other bone diseases are called bisphosphonates. They also prevent the loss of bone mass.

This news is important to patients because the bisphosphonate drugs are allegedly causing abnormal bone fractures as described in a Fosamax drug profile.

What is Fosamax?

Alendronate Sodium or its brand name Fosamax belongs to the bisphosphonates group of drugs. Bisphosphonic acid is the chemical description of Alendronate sodium.

Merck & Co. Inc., a pharmaceutical giant, first discovered and sold Fosamax. Barr Pharmaceuticals also manufactures it in the present time. Tablets and oral solutions are the forms of Fosamax.

Fosamax Uses

Fosamax are drugs that slow the rate of bone loss in postmenopausal women and men with steroid-induced osteoporosis.  It prevents bone fractures by slowing down bone density loss and increasing bone mass. Fosamax is also used to cure Pagets’s disease.

What are its precautions?

Doctors says that Fosamax tablet should not be taken if the patient cannot sit upright or stand for at least 30 minutes since it can cause serious complications in the stomach or esophagus.

Make sure to take Fosamax safely and report immediately to your doctor if you experience these other conditions:

    * trouble swallowing;
    * a vitamin D deficiency;
    * a dental problem
    * kidney disease; or
    * an ulcer or other problem in your stomach or esophagus.

What are its side effects?

Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome when using Fosamax:

    * constipation;
    * diarrhea;
    * dizziness;
    * feeling bloated or full;
    * flu-like symptoms at the start of treatment;
    * gas;
    * headache;
    * mild back, muscle, or joint pain;
    * mild stomach pain or upset;
    * nausea, vomiting; or
    * taste changes.

Fosamax Negative Effects

Studies and news report that Fosamax can actually leave bones more susceptible to infection and disease. Osteocronosis can develop when the body is unable to fight off infection because the bacteria will reach the jawbone. This situation is especially possible following a dental procedure. These side effects are more particularly for cancer patients and users who are taking the drug for more than five years.

Fosamax lawsuits are discussed over the media. Hence, if you experience any doubts and negative effects from taking the drug, it is a must to consult your doctor or healthcare provider on this.
