Paxil gastroschisisGastroschisis is a birth defect where infants have an unusual opening in the anterior abdominal wall through which some intestines freely protrude. There are a number of factors that may cause gastroschisis, some of which are complicated pregnancies, young maternal age and mothers who smoke during pregnancy. In addition, babies born to mother who used drug early in the pregnancy are prone to gastroschisis, Paxil gastroschisis.

Gastroschisis occurs in about 1 in every 5,000 infants. But studies show that there is an increasing incidence and the ratio is now 4.5 per 10,000 births.

Low birth weight and prematurity is common among babies born with gastroschisis. It can be detected within the period of pregnancy through a fetal ultrasound. It may also be discovered upon physical assessment of the newborn. A 5-cm vertical opening in the abdominal wall to the side of the umbilicus will be seen. Some parts of the small intestine protrude through the opening and lie outside of the abdomen. There are cases that the large intestine and other organs also stick out through the opening.

Children with gastroschisis often have decreased bowel mobility and difficulty with absorption. Surgical repair can correct the condition. The intestines will be pushed back inside the abdomen and the defect is closed. In cases where the intestine is inflamed, a special pouch is used to cover the intestine until the inflammation subsides and the intestine can be placed back into the abdomen. Difficulty with absorption of nutrients and passage of stool may still persist even after the surgical correction. In order to guarantee proper nutrition and elimination, long-term follow-up may be needed.

Most children can fully recover after the surgery but others may develop complications and may require special formulas for feeding. The overall health condition of the infant plays a big part in his recovery. Since this can be detected through fetal ultrasound or upon delivery, it is best that interventions be carried out as soon as possible to prevent any complications.
