MySpace Attack: E-Mail with Password Change Contains Viruses and Trojans
by
Danny Davids
Facebook and MySpace users can't get a break. If it's not some game vendor trying to get you to download a program that installs spyware on your computer, it's the companies themselves changing their configurations to let more people see your personal information. The latest attack is the " Password Reset " e-mail.
I found out about this because I received this e-mail just a few hours ago. MySpace Manager Iris Madrid informed me that " Because of the measures taken to provide safety to our clients, your password has been changed. You can find your new password in attached document. "
That was awfully nice of Iris, I thought--especially since I don't even HAVE a MySpace account. So I did a little snooping. Turns out this is similar to the e-mail assault Facebook users received in the fall of last year. The " attached document " in question is nothing more than one of several viruses or Trojan files that are being circulated through these e-mails. When opened, the file installs itself on your computer. In most cases, the end result is opening up your MySpace account to hackers who can access your personal information, including any bank and credit card account information.
Keep in mind that neither MySpace nor Facebook will send you an e-mail to notify you that your password has been changed. Neither will they send the information in an attached file. The safest thing you can do is to delete the e-mail message without opening the attached file.
